Youve already met Dylan, Julia, and Kier   now please meet Samantha. (And a big congratulations to  Niara  who just graduated, though well still have a few admissions insights from her this semester!) My name is Samantha and I am a second-year, MIA student here at SIPA with a concentration in International Security Policy and a specialization in International Conflict Resolution. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2013 with a dual degree in Political Science and Global Studies. In between graduating from undergrad and SIPA, I lived in Washington D.C. for four years where I first worked as an intern on Capitol Hill, and then as a legal assistant for Sidley Austin LLP in their International Trade and Arbitration division. After three years in the legal field, I wanted to transition into the policy field to better understand the implications of foreign policy on peacebuilding and conflict resolution. That is where SIPA came in, and now I get to learn about these implications while being taught by some of the leading minds in the field. What attracted you to SIPA and Columbia University? When I was making the decision to apply to graduate school, I made a list of all the things I wanted the program to have. I wanted to get both a theoretical and practical foundation regarding foreign policy; I wanted to learn from the leading minds in the field; I wanted to attend a place where I would have to work hard, but also could be socially engaged; and I wanted a program where my classmates would be from around the world and would bring new perspectives to policy discussions. SIPA and Columbia University, was the only school that had a blend of all of these elements, and this is what ultimately attracted me to the SIPA Masters in International Affairs program. What experiences do you think prepared you to attend SIPA? I believe my work and internship experience really prepared me for SIPA. These experiences made me passionate about pursuing a graduate degree at SIPA, and they also demonstrate that I had the skills to perform well in a working environment. Most students have three or more years of work experience before coming to SIPA, so my recommendation for future students is to get as much work or internship experience as possible. Even if future students are applying straight from the undergraduate level, any experience counts. Did you have a lot of quantitative experience when you applied to SIPA? Why or why not? How did you perform in those classes? When I was applying to SIPA, I had been out of school for four years and my job at the time did not have many quantitative elements to it. I kept asking myself: “Am I qualified enough?” If you are a prospective applicant with minimal quantitative experience and are looking to brush up on your quantitative skills before applying there are ways to do so. You can take a macroeconomics/microeconomics or statistics course through a local college, use online resources to practice basic quantitative skills, or see if you can jump on projects at work that have quantitative components. In order to familiarize incoming students with the quantitative methods used in its core curriculum, SIPA provides a math refresher course online over the summer, and while it is optional, I highly recommend reviewing it especially if you do not have a lot of quantitative experience. It really helped me brush up on the skills, and, despite my lack of quantitative experience, allowed me to create a foundatio n to do well in the quantitative courses that are a part of SIPA’s core curriculum. What has been the most challenging part of your SIPA experience? The biggest challenge has not been the coursework, the networking, nor the work life balance; but rather getting over the self-doubt that I acutely felt in my first semester. I constantly wondered: “How did I get in when my peers are uniquely qualified to be here?” This doubt resides in all of us but can oftentimes be hard to shake. However, once I dove in to my course work, became involved in some student organizations, and made some new friends, I slowly removed this layer of doubt and recognized I was exactly where I should be. What has been the best part of your SIPA experience? The best part of my SIPA experience has been the friendships and personal connections I have made while at SIPA. While SIPA and its coursework are unique and top-notch, it’s the people I have met that have truly enriched my experience. Through courses, student organizations, and winter-break trips run by SIPA students, I have made friendships with bright and passionate individuals from around the world. School can be stressful, but it helps when you have such amazing fellow SIPA classmates who are there for you when you need it.

The Protagonist, Macbeth Essay Macbeth is a classic tragic figure brought to ruin by his own greed, guilt, and fear. Shakespeare intensifies Macbeth’s tragic nature by showing him to be a valiant hero in the beginning of the play. He is a courageous warrior and one of King Duncan’s best generals. In the second scene of the play, Macbeth has just won his most important battle and saved Scotland from the Norwegian King. To honor his bravery, King Duncan gives Macbeth the title of Thane of Cawdor. This is one of the first steps to Macbeth’s undoing, for he longs to be more than just a thane. But the seed of greed has been planted, and Macbeth is a rash man. In the fifth scene of the play, another side of the early Macbeth is developed. He is shown to be a loving husband who values his wife and calls her † his dearest partner in greatness,† sharing what he is with her. They are obviously close, for he immediately writes a letter to Lady Macbeth and tells her about the prophecies of the three witches, for he wants to please her and give information about â€Å"what greatness is promised thee. † It is Lady Macbeth who further inflames Macbeth’s greed that was planted by the three evil witches. As soon as she reads Macbeth’s letter, she decides King Duncan must be killed so her husband can become king and she can become queen. There is no hesitation or indecision about her lust for power. Her only fear is that Macbeth is â€Å"too full of the milk of human kindness† to plan a murder. Therefore, she will take matters into her own hands and manipulate her husband into acquiescence. She tells Macbeth that immediate action should be taken, for â€Å"the future is in the instant. † She carefully lays the plans for her husband to murder Duncan on the very same night, as the king sleeps in their castle. Trusting the ability and judgment of his ife, Macbeth consents with some reluctance. Macbeth struggles with his agreement to murder Duncan, for Macbeth sees the good in people, and Duncan is a worthy and humble king; Duncan is also a kinsman and a guest in his castle. Macbeth, who can be truthful with himself early in the play, acknowledges that it is only â€Å"vaulting ambition† that makes him consider the vile deed. As his wife suspected, he is really too kind by nature to carry through with murderous plans. He tells Lady Macbeth, â€Å"We will proceed no further in this business. She will not listen to her husband, but strikes out at his strong sense of anity and pride in his manliness and calls him a fearful coward, in sharp contrast to the brave warrior he believes himself to be. Then a new trait of Macbeth, that haunts him through the rest of the play, is depicted. He is truly a fearful man: not afraid of murdering (he has murdered many on the battlefield), but afraid of being caught. When Lady Macbeth tells him to return the bloody daggers to the king’s chambers, the troubled Macbeth says, â€Å"I am afraid to think what I have done; Look on it again, I dare not. † The irony is that Macbeth’s conscience will make him look at the murder over and over again with no escape. Macbeth senses the depth of guilt immediately. When he looks at his bloody hands, he realizes that all of the water in the ocean will not be able to cleanse the blood from them or from his heart. His wife, who believes that â€Å"A little water clears us of the deed,† mocks his fear and tells him she would be ashamed to have a heart as white as his. Lady Macbeth, who knows her husband better than anyone else in the play does, realizes that her husband, basically kind in heart, will struggle with his conscience to the point of his undoing. She warns him not to be â€Å"lost so poorly in your thoughts. Macbeth can only reply, â€Å"Twere best to not know myself. † His self-hatred has begun. Lady Macbeth also reveals another of Macbeth’s traits; he is often not good at appearances or putting on a â€Å"false face. She warns him, as they make their plans to murder Duncan, that he must â€Å"look like the innocent flower,† She also warns him to appear bright and jovial to the guests at the royal banquet. She is fearful that his face cannot lie. And her fears are well founded, for at the banquet, Macbeth’s true soul cries out and incriminates him clearly. Ironically, Macbeth cannot enjoy wearing the crown that he has stolen because of mounting fear of discovery, and he fears his friend Banquo the most. Because Banquo is a good, honorable person who has vowed to â€Å"fight treasonous malice† and because he nows Macbeth so well, the king is certain that Banquo suspects the truth about him and will seek to right the wrong. Macbeth is also jealous of his friend because the witches have prophesied that Banquo’s heirs will become kings of Scotland. Macbeth, therefore, feels he has no choice but to murder Banquo and his son Fleance in order to protect himself and his stolen crown. He alone plans the second murder without consulting or telling his wife, and he has no indecision about this murder, as he did with the first. Macbeth only knows he must act quickly in order to control his power, his future, and his posterity. His has become a true tyrant! By the time of the royal banquet scene, found at mid-point in the play, Macbeth’s fear and guilt have driven him to irrationality, chaos, and loss of self-control. During the meal, he sees the ghost of Banquo sitting in his chair and openly incriminates himself to all his guests by denying his guilt and saying, â€Å"Thou canst say I did it. † His wife, who was always fearful about his being able to wear the false face, calls the ghost a â€Å"painting of you fear† and accuses her husband of being â€Å"quite unmanned in folly. † This time the attacks against his manhood do nothing to calm him down or hange his mind. Instead, he challenges the ghost to battle, as if he were still a noble warrior. But the armor does not seem to fit him correctly anymore; he appears to be a dwarf in giant’s clothing and only a â€Å"dark shadow† of the brave eneral once honored by the king. He realizes that his chaotic existence has brought about his undoing and that his life has no meaning, â€Å"a tale told by an idiot, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing. † Still attempting to appear manly, he goes out to meet his end, brought on by the vengeful Macduff, who carries the tyrant’s head on a pole for all to see. Macbeth was truly a tragic character. He had much to look forward to as Thane of Cawdor, but he wanted more. His greed led him to murder and theft, which causes guilt and fear. The fear leads to chaos, which causes his downfall.

Description Origins of Inflation Theory Inflation theory brings together ideas from quantum physics and particle physics to explore the early moments of the universe, following the big bang. According to inflation theory, the universe was created in an unstable energy state, which forced a rapid expansion of the universe in its early moments. One consequence is that the universe is vastly bigger than anticipated, far larger than the size that we can observe with our telescopes. Another consequence is that this theory predicts some traits- such as the uniform distribution of energy and the flat geometry of spacetime- which was not previously explained within the framework of the big bang theory. Developed in 1980 by particle physicist Alan Guth, inflation theory is today generally considered a widely-accepted component of the big bang theory, even though the central ideas of the big bang theory were well established for years prior to the development of inflation theory. The Origins of Inflation Theory The big bang theory had proven quite successful over the years, especially having been confirmed through the discovery of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Despite the great success of the theory to explain most aspects of the universe which we saw, there were three major problems remaining: The homogeneity problem (or, Why was the universe so incredibly uniform just one second after the big bang?; as the question is presented in Endless Universe: Beyond the Big Bang)The flatness problemThe predicted overproduction of magnetic monopoles The big bang model seemed to predict a curved universe in which energy wasnt distributed at all evenly, and in which there were a lot of magnetic monopoles, none of which matched the evidence. Particle physicist Alan Guth first learned of the flatness problem in a 1978 lecture at Cornell University by Robert Dicke. Over the next couple of years, Guth applied concepts from particle physics to the situation and developed an inflation model of the early universe. Guth presented his findings at a January 23, 1980 lecture at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. His revolutionary idea was that the principles of quantum physics at the heart of particle physics could be applied to the early moments of the big bang creation. The universe would have been created with a high energy density. Thermodynamics dictate that the density of the universe would have forced it to expand extremely rapidly. For those who are interested in more detail, essentially the universe would have been created in a false vacuum with the Higgs mechanism turned off (or, put another way, the Higgs boson didnt exist). It would have gone through a process of supercooling, seeking out a stable lower-energy state (a true vacuum in which the Higgs mechanism switched on), and it was this supercooling process which drove the inflationary period of rapid expansion. How rapidly? The universe would have doubled in size every 10-35 seconds. Even if the universe had curvature when it started, that much expansion would cause it to appear flat today. (Consider that the size of the Earth is large enough that it appears to us to be flat, even though we know that the surface we stand on is the curved outside of a sphere.) Similarly, energy is distributed so evenly because when it started out, we were a very small part of the universe, and that part of the universe expanded so quickly that if there were any major uneven distributions of energy, theyd be too far away for us to perceive. This is a solution to the homogeneity problem. Refining the Theory The problem with the theory, as far as Guth could tell, was that once the inflation began, it would continue forever. Quantification of Drug Concentrations: Peak â€Å"area† generally correlates with the amount of drug that is loaded onto a column and on the original drug concentration. But, there can be sample-to-sample variations due to the extraction efficiency, the loading volumes, or the detection efficiency, etc. Again, the internal standard is utilized to correct for variations.–Similar to the relative retention time, relative peak intensity is defined and related to drug concentration. Unlike the relative retention time, the given variation in the peak area is not always similar for all the molecules. Thus, the internal standard is chosen to be chemically similar to the analyte of interest to best correct for variations. However, adequate similarity is not easy to predict or establish. Protocol for Quantification of Analyte Concentration Based Upon a Calibration Curve: A known quantity of an internal standard is first added to every sample (including controls and calibrators) before any other preparative step. All samples are then prepared through the identical preparative steps, separated by a chromatographic method and quantitatively detected. The relative peak intensities are measured for a series of calibrators with a fixed amount of internal standard and varying amounts of a known analyte. These relative peak intensities are fit to an equation, generally linear, to define a calibration curve. The relative peak intensities of unknown samples are then calculated and then related to the calibration curve to quantify the concentration of the analyte(drug) in the original clinical sample. Some Characterization Techniques: Affinity Chromatography: Affinity chromatography is used for separating biochemical mixtures based on the highly specific interaction between conjugates such as that between antigens and antibodies, enzymes and substrates, or receptors and ligands. Principle: Here, the stationary phase used is typically a gel matrix, often of agarose. Generally, we use an undefined heterogeneous group of molecules in solution, like, for example, growth medium or blood serum. The molecule of interest will be having a well-defined property, and can be put to use during the affinity purification process. This process can thus be seen as a process of entrapment, with target molecule getting entrapped on solid or stationary phase and/ or medium. The molecules of mobile phase component will not become trapped as they do not possess this property. The stationary phase is then removed from the mixture, washed and target molecule released from entrapment in process known as elution. The most common use of affinity chromatography is for the purification of recombinant proteins. Affinity chromatography has use in number of applications, including purification from nucleic acid, and purification from blood and also protein purification from cell free extracts. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC): It is a chromatography technique used to separate non-volatile and stable mixtures. Thin-layer chromatography analysis is performed on sheet of various mediums, such as glass, plastic, or aluminum foil, they are then coated with a thin layer of adsorbent material, like silica gel, cellulose and also aluminum oxide. Alcohol should not be legal in U.S. because it is impacts negatively on health, family, community and on a person’s education. Alcohol drinking is like taking a drug. It is a form of drug addiction and drug abuse. Alcoholism is a worldwide problem that affects many people. Drinking alcohol has negative short and long term effects. Alcoholism has been associated with adverse effects on health, family, community, and education (Marshall, 2000). However, the effects on a person depends on particular factors such as how often and how much alcohol is taken, a person’s age, gender, when a person begun drinking and how long they have been drinking, their health, and family history (Begleiter & Kissin, 1996). It is in this regard t hat alcohol should not be legal in the United States. Alcohol is addictive, and people become addicts end up spending a lot of money on alcohol. It means that when they spend all the money they have on alcohol, they forget their families, and are not able to support the community in anyway. Some resort to stealing to sustain their drinking habit. Alcohol addicts sometimes engage in robbery acts to get the money for drinks. Community becomes at risk of destruction with excessive alcohol consumption allowed. When many people engage in excessive consumption of alcohol, education becomes at risk. People drop out of school, and illiteracy level increase in the community. In addition, the progress and development of any community depends on the health of its people. Therefore, when alcohol puts the health of its members at risk, community suffers in the long run. Alcohol affects both female and male differently. Men who consume alcohol, daily have an increased risk of health risks. Such men can experience cancer and heart disease in the long-term and  low energy to sexual difficulties in the short-term (Brick, 2004). Men are more likely to suffer from liver cirrhosis, and have higher chances of being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Nearly 26.6% of deaths among men of be tween 16 and 24 years old can be attributed to alcohol consumption. Men tend to be more dependent of alcohol (Marshall, 2000). Drinking too much alcohol damages a person’s body organs such as liver, brain, stomach, heart, and intestines. Brain is adversely affected because the brain cells die leading to loss of memory, learning difficulties, brain disorders, confusion, and problems with attention (Blane & Leonard, 1999). Liver is highly affected because of the great possibility of developing cancer in the liver, throat and mouth. The stomach may also acquire ulcers. Long-term drinking has also been linked to stroke and heart failure. The nervous system can also experience damage leading to behavioral and physical problems (Dasgupta, 2011). These problems affect health, family, community, and education in the long-term because of expenses associated with alcohol consumption, and possible treatment measures. Alcohol poses many effects on the body such as fertility. It reduces levels of testosterone. As a result, it could decline sperm quantity and quality, and lead to loss of libido. Alcohol is toxic to the testicles, and affects hormones. It could hamper production of sperms, hinder them from developing properly, and slow their movement towards the egg. Alcohol can also limit the liver from metabolizing vitamin A properly. It also depresses the nervous system, and could result in difficulty in getting and keeping erection (Peters, 2008). Many young adults do not realize that alcohol has a fattening effect. Alcohol can reduce the amount of fat that the body burns for energy. The human body makes several attempts to eliminate alcohol very fast as it cannot remain in the body for storage. The process takes priority over nutrient absorption and burning of fat. In the long-term, there could be a serious damage in the appearance. Other effects include loss of hair in the body, breast enlargement, and withering of testicles (Dasgupta, 2011). Alcohol has also been associated with worsening of skin disorders such as rosacae. Rosacae skin disorder is responsible for expansion of blood vessels in the face making it redder. Heavy drinking can cause the appearance of pus spots and red bumps. It has also been linked to inflammation, pain and swelling in the joints. The effect is common among men of between 30 and 60 years old  (Hannigan, Spear, Spear & Goodlett, 1999). As mentioned earlier, heavy drinking increases the chances of heart disease, liver damage, bone disease, cancer, anxiety and depression, and type II diabetes. Heavy consumption of alcohol also caused inflammation on the pancreas and irritates stomach. These effects indirectly affect family, community and education (Peters, 2008). Women are not safe from alcohol either. The body of women takes much time to process alcohol compared to men. Women feel more effects of alcohol than men even when they drink the same amount. The fertility of women is at risk with heavy consumption of alcohol. Women are high risk of acquiring breast cancer, and adverse impacts of the menopause. Women are advised in several studies to avoid alcohol when trying to have a baby. Alcohol disrupts menstrual cycle in women, and limits their chances of conceiving. These are bad effects on the body, and not good for family and community in general. Therefore, alcohol should not be legal in the United States (Hannigan, Spear, Spear & Goodlett, 1999). While drinking less alcohol may make one look good, heavy consumption causes bad skin, tired eyes, and weight gain for both f emale and male. It also interferes with people’s sleep. Heavy consumers of alcohol often wake up and feel like they have not had enough rest. Alcohol dehydrates the body and skin. It deprives the skin of certain vital nutrients and vitamins. Hence, it is not good for health. Alcohol is also responsible for much divorce among couples due to fights in the family, and lack of finances for family upkeep (Dasgupta, 2011). Alcohol is depressant. It means that alcohol calms people down, and slows down some body organs. With only 0.05% level of blood-alcohol, a person begins getting dulled judgment, and his or her inhibitions get released. They then become clumsy and start having slurred speech with only a 0.10% blood-alcohol level. At 0.30% level of blood-alcohol, one nearly becomes unconscious. Any addition after that becomes extremely dangerous since at 0.45%, one can get into a coma. Brain shuts down from 0.70% and stop controlling the heart, breathing, and one may end up dead. Other short-term effects include blurred vision, blackouts and insomnia. These can lead to injuries, accidents, and even death. Drinking alcohol also causes hangover in the next morning, which is associated with nausea, headaches, heartburn, fatigue, thirst, and dizziness. There are many side effects of alcohol (Peters, 2008).Conclusion In conclusion, consumption of alcohol should be reconsidered in U.S because  of its adverse effects on health, family, community, and education. Alcohol should only be taken when necessary. The side effects are adverse and continue to destroy people across the world.
